In what way can you get your freeware project some exposure?

I'm more interested in answers involving downloadable desktop software.

Make your freeware Opensource, then it'll get exposure, and it will get better too.

Submit your app to something like Lockergnome.

Become a human spambot. Select a few high profile blogs and find articles relevant to your program , where you can leave a comment "hey, I did something that solves the problem you are talking about, check it out here".

Write articles about it, its motivation, what it does, any interesting programming theme you've discovered while you were doing it and put it on tech sites, or your blog if it has some traffic.

Submit it to a freeware site.

I think the common theme here would be to get the mouth to mouth ball rolling.

  1. Submit on several download sites such as download.com, snapfiles.com
  2. Design a good website with lot of content so that people will easily find you on Google

If you product is good, then you will automatically get publicity through various blogs, forums etc because it would be a freeware. People love freeware.

Website with good content (different keywords) is the key.

In my opionion, just making a software open source need not make it popular. A closed source product, if it is very good can reach many people.

Yes I agree, if you have the time to make it great by yourself, no need to go open source, I use lots of great freeware/donation-ware as well. But It's becoming more and more of an exception in my opinion, as open source has been getting more popular.

Give it a good name, representative of what it does. Have your domain name be that name, and let the search engines do the rest. For example, mine is A Ruler For Windows
