Looking for a free service, or software to monitor 2 websites, one is hosted on a linux machine, and the other a windows machine (though, shouldn't really matter).

Any suggestions?

A free external option: http://mon.itor.us/

Nagios is a pretty nice open source solution for system monitoring if you have a *nix server to put it on. The configuration takes a little time to learn, but pays off if you want something that's very flexible and full featured.

Lots of threads already on Stack Overflow about this, like this one:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/276180/server-monitoring-and-alerting-software

You also have the necessary rep to take part in the Server Fault beta which would be a really good place for this question.

Edit: there's a thread currently on the first page of Server Fault that you may find useful: http://serverfault.com/questions/44/what-tool-do-you-use-to-monitor-your-servers

I use http://www.nagios.org/ for real time monitoring. I love it and it has saved my bum many many times.

I just tried the free version of splunk.com for historical monitoring. I can't really rate it yet since I've only used it for one day.

Munin is an alternative to nagios, simpler but easier to learn and set up.

Another good tool is monit. You can write scripts for it, almost in English grammar.

You didn't specify what kind of monitoring you want.

If you want just availability checks, these tools/services mentioned before are ok. If you want integrity checks too (be notified when your site changes), I will suggest the free service that I am working on, Sucuri NBIM (Network-based integrity monitor). Link:

http://sucuri.net

*It also does monitoring of other resources, like whois changes, dns, etc.. **just a little biased :)

Thanks,
