I've been recently informed that my development team will be upgraded from our standard issue Lenovo (IBM) T60 to the R400, specifically the 7439-1BU model.

First: Yes, I know... we should have desktops. Unfortunately, I don't control the hardware decisions so there's little I can do about that. All I can do is try to squeeze as much performance out of the standard issue machines as possible.

R400 Model Details

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this machine and/or opinions on it. Based on what I've read in several SO threads and my own experience I obviously want to try to get what we can from this list, if possible:

  • Max RAM (4GB on the R400 is seems)
  • Dual HDs
  • Optimal performance versus portability/battery life

We aren't as concerned about screen size (R500 is a bit larger) as we all have docking stations with external monitors. Portability is not too big a concern. Several people work from home, but I think few of us are really developing "off the grid" where we need battery life and a good screen. We need performance.

Thoughts?

You want fast hard drives. 5400s are usually the defaults, and 5400s will make you cry. Get the fastest possible HDs you can get on there.
