I am working on a site that must be designed with mobile accessibility in mind. As part of our brainstorming, we wondered whether it's possible to detect, for a mobile browser (i.e. Mobile Safari or the Android browser), when the viewing device has changed orientation, and to use that as a trigger to change page content? As the title o...
I am new to web-design. I want to set the page-width so that it appears well in a 800x600 resolution screen. I normally use Tables but I read somewhere that excessive use of Tables slows the performance of the website. What other thing I can use and how to set the width?

Hi All,
When designing a web application/web site, is there an accepted practice on when to open a link on a new window?
Currently, if the site being linked to is outside the domain (say Google.com), I am always launching it on a new window. If the page being linked is within the same domain, I open it on the current active window.

I need help explaining to my boss why her design is poor on a client's website. She has no knowledge of the web, and it can be difficult as a web developer working with a woman who is a graphic designer (not even a web designer really). On a current site she has designed, an image bar "needs" to be ~1200px according to her, though it i...
As a part of my final year university project I am designing a social networking website targeted mainly to older users. No it's not a path issue...or else the site won't have a design.
The website looks fine if I open it with IE8 in my computer.
But after I upload it to IIS 6.0 two things change on positioning.

Lets say I was to develop a small forum script, what types of topics pages would you find most helpful? I'd like to get an idea of what should be added.
Viewing popular phpBB forums, they offer "Unanswered Posts", "Active Topics" and "Unread Topics". Obviously I'm already including a page to view your own topics and posts.

I'm working on a comparison website, so needless to say the search function is the primary feature of the site. I have two input text boxes and a search button. At the moment, the input text boxes use Ajax to query the database and show a drop-down box, but I'm wondering if it would be more intuitive to use a select box instead? The seco...
I'm implementing a small web app widget that shows a legend/key for a diagram (or chart/map/graph/whatever), but only during mouseover of the widget. It's basically just going to be a div with a background image. What would be a good icon that communicates "I show the legend" or "I am the legend" to the unfamiliar users? I'm looking for ...

I've been tasked with laying out a portion of a screen for a customer care (call center) app that serves as sort of a header/summary block at the top of the screen. Here's what it looks like:
