I'd thinking about using an external web site performance tool to monitor the load time of our site through time.

I found webmetrics.com. Seems pretty ok with email reports etc.

Any other suggestions? I'm looking for biggest value / $ :)

How about a divide by zero exception? Take a look at mon.itor.us and see if it fits your needs.

I am very happy with dotcom-monitor: http://dotcom-monitor.com/

I started with them about 6 years ago, when they were just starting. I have found them to be very reliable, and they regularly add features over time.

They have a 1-site free service, as well as very inexpensive paid services starting at about $10/mo. to monitor 1 site every 3 hours. You can monitor more often, and more complex services at a higher fee.

Their online and emailed reports are free; and I have alerts sent to my phone's txt email address. Other devices like pagers or phone calls are also available for a fee.

Disclaimer: my only relationship with this vendor currently is happy customer, although I might sign up for their affiliate program in the future (the link above is not an affiliate link)
