I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of frameworks to give an old desktop application a much needed facelift.
The application has had a long life without anyone giving any attention to its exterior resulting in a monster with an 80s look.
I've just downloaded and tried MyDoggy framework for making windows floatable and dockable...

EDIT: This turned out not be a problem with the code at all, but with a bug in the Groovy Eclipse plugin (http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GRECLIPSE-373)
Eclipse is giving me a weird error message about ambiguous types in a Java program and I really don't understand why. I have an interface that takes a generic parameter indicating what ...

Can you give me some advice on how to best ensure that two applications (one in C#, the other in Java) will be compatible and efficient in exchanging data? Are there any gotchas that you have encountered?
The scenario is point to point, one host is a service provider and the other is a service consumer.

We're trying to determine how to implement a simple plugin framework for a service we are implementing that allows different types of calculators to be "plugged-in".
After reading a number of posts about Java plugin frameworks, it seems like the most common options are:
OSGI
"Rolling your own" plugin framework

We deal with alot of UGC (1m+/mo) and sometimes our users will input large strings with no spaces which causes web browsers to display content in a strange manner, breaking UI here and there.
I am trying to find a way to intelligently and quickly process text up to 50k and insert tags where appropriate.
I have already built this, but ...

A JTextPane lets you embed JComponents and images. When you select a section of the document the text is highlighted but the embedded items are not. You can have the embedded components notified by way of a CaretListener after the event, but I was wondering if there was a way to have them highlighted during mouse selections?

I am deploying a signed & trusted applet. We need to run the applet in a separate JVM & increase the heap size. Setting separate_jvm & java_arguments works on our local boxes. Curiously we have clients that though they are using 1.6.0_15 don't seem to be running the new plugin architecture. When I check their Java config, "use next-gener...
While looking at some open source code to learn more about J2EE, I came across classes (or packages) named DataVO. In the code I looked at, this was simply serialized XML used by other classes.
What is the DataVO pattern exactly? and how does it differ from Data access object or Data transfer object?
Thanks!

The class then has methods that access this field (which is never set in the constructor and has no setter method). So how does the conta...
