It seems to me that any truly successful online business (or traditional business with a successful online presence) needs to have an in house development team.
This seems obvious to me, but can anyone give some solid bullet points that back this view up?
Alternatively, outsourcing of your online development smacks of treating software...
What is the best website to find freelance programmers? I would like to outsource an iphone application ( possibly the rest of the mobile platforms as well).
Has anyone used:

There are a number of sites where you can post programming tasks. The general view I have picked up from other questions is that these sites are not very good at delivering successful results. But it seems to me that it must depend greatly on the type of task, and I suspect the success rate of outsourcing to rent-a-coder, elance, etc. wi...
I'm an IT Professional/Entrepreneur with a lot of experience on this side of the industry, but I'm not a programmer by any means. Being that we're on different sides of the same industry, often non-technical people come to me with projects for their companies or organizations that require software development...but I hesitate to take th...
They're hiring me as their "lead programmer" as they call it, but it's really a project manager position. I will be doing little or no programming, they want to outsource the programming to an Indian shop. (their call, not mine)
"The Mythical Man Month" comes to mind, given their interest in outsourcing, but I'm sure there's quite a few...
Apart from many cost cuttings that have taken at my workplace (a non-IT, financial company) for the past 18 months, something that has affected developers like me directly is that new projects have been shelved and few existing projects are being outsourced (have been told that outsourcing makes the cost variable). All these sometimes at...
What / where is the quote about a good dev being x times better / faster than an average one?
I am having issues outsourcing stuff to junior developers and getting rubbish back, rather than hiring an MS partner level dev in-house, learning on the job and getting excellent quality, maintainable code as a result, for about the same price o...

I've seen the many different ways I can build a function/service to generate short URLs which I can then control via my own domain.
This sounds like a great idea; however, as I look at the advantages such as being able to control these URLs long term, adjusting the end location if needed have more tracking over where they wind up, etc.

Hi there,
I hope to be studying software engineering at Waterloo university (Ontario, Canada) in a year or two more; however my dad remains skeptical about outsourcing.
All the professors I have asked at a university convention seem to beat around the bush when I ask them; and I wouldn't expect them to give me a straight answer anyways...
Hi all,
It seems that a great way to build an app might be to identify all the horizontal / domain-independent pieces that don't already exist in the form of gems, plugins or engines, and commission an outsourcing firm to build those pieces in complete isolation from the rest of the code base.
So let's assume a plugin is a great way. ...
I’m having some terrible experiences trying to outsource development to people on websites such as ODesk and RentACoder.
Small green-field apps seem generally ok (shoddy work is generally limited in impact), but it always turns to disaster when trying to get people to work with existing codebases.
I’ve had a guy rated in the top 100 on...
I want to start a software outsourcing business. I registered it and need to make a professionally looking website. Just one page is OK. I need also to create an email system to send out email from my website email, not gmail or yahoo mail. Can you advise me on the cheapest and fastest way to do it?

Hi,
we are a small company and implement medium size programs for our clients, mostly in C++. Sometimes we are running out of time and we think about outsourcing the development of some parts of our programs. We are able to pay up to 50$ per hour if the programmer worths it.
But the problem that we face, is that of privacy. I mean, we ...
I am used to doing development while following agile practices, so short iterations, with very flexible planning, as the design can change based upon comments/suggestions.
But, I recently had interviewed for a job where all their development is done in India, and since I have never done anything like that I wasn't offered the job.
So, ...
I've worked on outsourced projects in the past, and have seen a few enormous pitfalls. The thing is that many of those issues, in retrospect, were avoidable at some point.
I've never heard of a trouble-free outsourced project, but if work's going partially overseas, what best practices avoid some of the headaches?
Assume, for the pu...
When using external developers to help with EC2/S3 administration and development tasks what would be the normal protocol for sharing account information? I'm a little reluctant to give the Amazon account password away. If the developer has the access id and secret key, would he need a password? Also, what are the possible pitfalls of gi...
I am not asking about which tool is the best (google, lighthouse, github...), but I'm asking about using those tools.
Traditionally, we used bugzilla and other self hosted tools to manage our closed and open source project, but we now start considering outsourcing tools like bug tracking, SCM...

I'm planning on hiring a freelancer to work with me on a project. All of my code is on my SVN, but I don't want some of it to be available to the other programmer. That said, there are many directories, and I want the other person (who I have never met) to only access certain directories, for both read and write.
I can't find anything i...
Hello all, I've been working on a project that has just been outsourced about 1/2 into SharePoint integration. My role is UX/design and all front-end development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
This outsourcing is a first for me and I'm wanting to compile some handoff materials that will help the new folks doing the integration. I'm imagining th...
