Hi all,
I have some work items created in VS 2010, with some effort (hours) estimation added. Now when I view this my query in MS Project 2010, how do I relate the Duration field to my estimated efforts for each work items?
I'm new to using these features in TFS and trying to learn.
Thanks,
Ben

How do you start planning a fairly large project? Do you immediately start writing up the major classes and break it down further and further? Do you sit down and draw out some UML?
I'm designing my first large project (well, large compared to the other ones) and I'm looking for ideas.

Hello, we're transitioning to doing all our task tracking in TFS 2010 and I'm wondering if there is a more lightweight way of working with it than through Visual Studio?
Just some sort of web-interface or a lightweight client, or even some powershell commandlets where I can create new tasks and add information to existing ones.

I'm working on a project where I'm using mindmeister.com as a tool when brainstorming new ideas.
Now I need a tool where I can define roles and what responsibilities they have, and link this to a person / persons. It would also be nice if I could add tasks with a due date for each person.
Are there any open source websites which has th...
I've been looking for ways to learn about the right way to manage a software project, and I've stumbled upon the following blog post. I've learned some of the things mentioned the hard way, others make sense, and yet others are still unclear to me.
To sum up, the author lists a bunch of features of a project and how much those features...
I am currently a single BI developer over a corporate datawarehouse and cube. I use SQL Server 2008, SSAS, and SSIS as my basic toolkit. I use Visual Studio +BIDS and TFS for my IDE and source control. I am about to take on multiple projects with an offshore vendor and I am worried about managing change. My major concern is manging merge...
I spent a lot of time reading blogs and tutorials on the Net regarding how to do this and that with VS2010, but I thought it would be better to learn it in a more systematic way.
Do you know of a good website/book that will teach me how to use Visual Studio 2010/2008 Team System + Microsoft Project to perform various tasks from Project ...
Hi,
We're currently looking at an IT upgrade and I'm after recommendations for a tool which can do some or all of the following.
SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff)
Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access)
Reporting on code churn, time spent on ta...
I realize there are various kinds of software projects:
commercial (for John Doe)
industrial (for Mr. Montgomery Burns)
successful open-source (with audience larger than, say, 10 people)
personal projects (with audience size in the vicinity of 1).
each of which releases a new version of their product on different conditions. I'm part...
Bounty clarification
I know it's a subjective question. The ideal answer I'm looking is one that explains why the quoted scenario here would be so surprising.
If you think the quoted scenario is it fact not surprising and to be expected, please break down the steps to prove how such a little app can take over a month and several thousa...
To me "Agile" methodology is a common-sense oriented approach and one that should likely be adopted for most software projects. I find that while a lot of Middle Tier Developers and Front End developers find it a very sensible project delivery model, plenty of Database developers (and good ones) seem to be totally against it. They are ve...
Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ).
I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebo...

Hi All
I've been searching all over the internet for days.
Does anybody have, or know of, and can share sample Feature Driven Development documents? I keep coming across gazillions of "samples" with absolutely no useful information whatsoever.
Thank you

We're currently using Visual Source Safe and BugNet and looking to migrate up and away from VSS. I've been pushing for either SVN ( a) we're an ASP.NET shop, b) DCVS is not an option - no matter how much I like Hg ;-) or TFS. Well we finally got a new dev server, so I talked the boss into installing TFS on it (30 day trial). In the meant...
Hello,
It's possible that the answer to this question may just be standard bug tracking software like jira or fogbugz, but I'm kind of hoping someone out there knows a better system for what I'm describing.
My most current project is requiring a lot of setup quirkiness to get into a position where I can actually start a coding section. ...
I am looking for the best way to keep track of the business rules for both developers and everybody else (support staff / management) in a startup enviroment. The challenge is that our business model requires quite a lot of different business rules, which are created pretty much on the fly and evolving organically after that. After runni...
Working alone on academic research sometimes breeds bad habits. With no one else reading my code, I would write a lot of throw-away code, and I would lose track of intermediate results which, weeks or months later, I wish I had retained.
My recent attempts to make my personal workflow conform to the Joel Test raised interesting question...
I run a small startup and am always on the lookout for quality engineers. I've seen someone solicit SO with a similar question but there was only one response so I'm going to solicit the community again. What book do you recommend on software development methodologies (or on a specific methodology) that good for project managers? So I'm looking for a book that overviews methodologies from the aspect of a PM not a developer.
