Hi,
We have a Perl program to validate XML which is invoked from a Java program. It is not able to write to standard error and hanging in the print location.
Perl is writing to STDERR and a java program is reading the STDERR using getErrorStream() function. But the Perl program is hanging to write to STDERR. I suspect Java function is...
Right now I'm using exec to redirect stderr to an error log with
exec 2>> ${errorLog}
The only downside is that I have to start each run with a timestamp since exec just pushes the text straight into the log file. Is there a way to redirect stderr but allow me to append text to it, such as a time stamp?

Hello!
I have a simple script which is used to start another program. This other program may sometimes yield a SIGSEGV, which disrupts my output. I have therefore added a couple of lines which is supposed to temporarily redirect the stderr to /dev/null such that the SIGSEGV is ignored. The following is a draft of my code:
exec 2> /dev/...
I want to capture the errors from a script into a file instead of to the screen.
In *nix, this is done with stderr redirection, usually
echo "Error" 2> errorfile.log
How do I do it in CMD script under windows?
Thanks!
Miki

I am having a problem with logging to output from an automated build.
The build is done with a Makefile and the makefile utility.
The problem is that normal output like compiler command lines go to stdout and compile errors go to stderr.
I want to get the output from the build as it would show on the screen. So something like:

Does ABAP allow writing to stdout and stderr? I need to write small programs to test interface connections to SAP systems via a job scheduler(Cronacle). For instance, start/write 'Hello World!' + date + time to stdout/exit. I'm a .net programmer tasked with this seemingly TRIVIAL program and I'm stuck.

Hi,
I would like to know, where does java stderr standardly go?
I know I can change the stderr using System.setErr, which 'Reassigns the "standard" error output stream.', but I dont know, which one is "standard".
I would like to specify my question more:
I have C++ library that I use in java (jni). The problem is that it appears that ...
Some compilers let you set warnings as errors, so that you'll never leave any compiler warnings behind, because if you do, the code won't build. This is a Good Thing.
Unfortunately, some compilers don't have a flag for warnings-as-errors.
I need to write a shell script or wrapper that provides the feature.
Presumably it parses the com...
Is there a way I can tell whether stderr is outputting to a file or the terminal within a C/C++ program? I need to output different error message depending on whether the program is invoked as:
./program
or like:
./program 2>> file

Are there any specific advantages or disadvantages to either?

Let's say I have a script like the following:
useless.sh
echo "This Is Error" 1>&2
echo "This Is Output"
And I have another shell script:
alsoUseless.sh
./useless.sh | sed 's/Output/Useless/'
I want to capture "This Is Error", or any other stderr from useless.sh, into a variable.
Let's call it ERROR.
Notice that I am using stdo...
I wrote a program for linux using libxml2 for html parsing. Although it does its job, the html parser writes lots of various errors to stderr. Is it possible to disable stderr at all (or redirect it to /dev/null while not having to run it with a redirecting shell script)? I can live with having to write my own errors to stdout, I just wa...
Is there some way I can catch when a method generates a write to STDERR?
I'm trying to pre-pend some information with each STDERR write.
let's say our method is:
parser.thatGeneratesSTDERR();
it'll generate something like
line 37:29 no viable alternative at character 'a'
can I just wrap it with something that catches the stderr to...
I'm using the Enerjy (http://www.enerjy.com/) static code analyzer tool on my Java code. It tells me that the following line:
System.err.println("Ignored that database");
is bad because it uses System.err. The exact error is: "JAVA0267 Use of System.err"
What is wrong with using System.err?

Hello,
I am just testing a small program that I want to test.
I am wondering if there is a way to use the stderr to display what the actual error was.
For example, if the file doesn't exist. Is there a standard error that I can display.
I am using stderr, and I thought by using that, I could display what the actual error was.

I have a bash script that prompts the user for input with 'read'. If stdout or stderr is piped to something other than a terminal, I would like to suppress this step. Is that possible?

I've created a small Bash script that does a MySQL data dump. Because the dump can be fairly large I put the process in the background and then wait for either an error or the log to show up in the file system. I have the following code:

I have a program that I want to automate runs for, since it takes awhile to complete. For some reason it outputs everything to stderr instead of stdout, and I'd like to check on its progress, so I find myself needing to redirect stderr output within a start command.
I tried this:
